THE STORY

How did it all start?

The woman behind 4MAT--one of the most practical and time tested teaching methods in the world with a solid track record of performance.
THE BEGINNING

Meet Dr. Bernice McCarthy

Dr. Bernice McCarthy
Chief Innovation Officer

The 4MAT model was created in 1979 by Dr. Bernice McCarthy, an award winning teacher with 25 years classroom experience. Her goal was to create a simple and effective model for teachers that would help them reach out to more students more often.

Why did some children love school while some not, despite their best efforts?

The story begins with Bernice's personal search to enable her five sons to learn in the diverse ways they each needed to learn. She saw that although they were all equally intelligent, some loved and excelled in the academic school environment, while some of the others disliked it so much and declared they would never go to school again!

What was different about them?

As a high school teacher, she offered special sessions for students that wanted supplemental learning. She ended up attracting all the students that other teachers could no longer handle. Of course, these students had fun a lot of fun with Bernice who restored for them the joy of learning.

How should teachers teach to help all the students love to learn?

What would it take to help teachers recognize the intelligence of all their students?

Why did some teachers fail to recognize that these "special" students were just as intelligent as everybody else?

What would happen
if everyone loved learning?

Determined to find answers, Dr. Bernice McCarthy began her studies at Northwestern University to dive into the best learning theories and practices. This led to the creation of the 4MAT model; a simple and elegant way to teach anything to anyone, at any level.

The rest is history.
