At the center is the learning human brain that perceives and processes, non-stop. Once you learn how we learn, you become an explorer equipped with a map to the journey of growth and transformation.

4MAT is a framework for teaching and instructional design, for organizational learning, for management and leadership, for communication and problem-solving.

Who is Dr. Bernice McCarthy?

The 4MAT model was created in 1979 by Dr. Bernice McCarthy, an award winning teacher with 25 years classroom experience. Her goal was to create a simple and effective model for teachers that would help them reach out to more students more often.

Why 4MAT?

  • 4MAT enables the adaptive possibilities afforded to each learner’s uniqueness by their interactions with the cycle design created and delivered by the teacher/trainer.
  • The 4MAT practice strategies offer learner diversity options, differentiating to bring all learners to mastery and taking place best in a laboratory setting.
  • 4MAT deals with the world of emotion and feeling, which has not been given the merit and understanding it deserves as a negotiator of humanness, and as equal partner in the interplay between feeling and reason. 4MAT requires that recognition and use.
  • The content we teach through 4MAT, is the world of information and knowledge. It requires that the conceptualization of that content relate directly to all learners.

There are two types of programs open to you.

Road to Mastery

A three-step process to becoming a Master 4MAT Trainer. Start as a practitioner, then trainer, and then a Master Trainer.

Step 1. 4MAT Practitioner

Option A. Guided Track (online)
Journey with Dr. McCarthy or a certified instructor on this guided process towards becoming a certified 4MAT practitioner.
Option B. Self-Study Track (online)
Become a certified 4MAT practitioner, journeying by yourself or with colleagues!
Option C. Live (online)
Schedule your Live Online 4MAT Practitioner Certification workshop with a Dr. Bernice McCarthy or a 4MAT Master Trainer near you! The training can be customized depending on your industry and needs, and will usually require three or four days to complete.
